    School/College Systems

I've been wondering recently about school systems in other countries. i don't really understand any apart from my own (obv.) and kind of the english one.
    anyone want to share??

here's the way it works in Ireland (ROI):

Usually a Playschool or Montessori As pre-school

    Primary School:
    Junior Infants (one year)
    Senior Infants (one year)
    1st - 6th class

    Secondary School:
    1st Year to 6th year
Two big exam years are 3rd year and 6th year, in 3rd you do the Junior Cert, and in 6th you do the Leaving cert.
the points you get in the leaving determine which college you can get into etc.

i hate the whole points system the way it is, and i was just wondering what it's like elsewhere......?

in the usa it goes like this

preschool(optional or at leaste it used to be):
    ages 3-4

    elementary school:
    kindergarten- ages5-6
    first grade- ages6-7
    second grade- ages7-8
    third grade- ages8-9
    fourth grade- ages9-10
    fifth grade- ages10-11
    sixth grade- ages 11-12

    junior high/ middle school:
    seventh grade- ages 12-13
    eighth grade- ages 13-14

    {sometimes middle schools contain grades 5-8/6-8 and elementary schools only go up to 4th or 5th grade}

    high school:
    grade 9{freshman} ages14-15
    grade 10{sophomore} ages15-16
    grade 11{junior} ages16-17
    grade 12{senior} ages17-18

in grade 12 you graduate and either go on to college or whatever.

i'm not too sure on testing cause its different in every state.
in my state you do testing in grades 4, 6, 7, 8 & 10 called MCAS
it only really counts in grade 10, cause in that grade you need it to graduate.
and  theres PSATS and SATS which you take in 11/12 grade for college.

i think we already have a thread on this... :/ might of been a while back tho.

    nevermind! in england it is

    nursery/preschool

    primary school -

    reception-year 6 . you take SAT's in year 6

high school - years 7-11. you take SAT's in year 9 then GCSE's in year 11

you can then either drop out, carry on at 6th form in your school(if they have one) or go to college.

the college you go to depends on how well you did in your GCSE's.

in 6th form the years tend to be called years 12 and 13 but at college they call them upper and lower 6th.

you take your AS's in the first year and A2's (A levels) in the second year.

    ENGLAND
Basically, you go through schools and different 'key stages' (levels of learning)

    Primary School

    Reception: ages 4-5

    Key Stage 1
    Year 1: ages 5-6
Year 2: ages 6-7 ('SATS' EXAMS)

    Junior School

    Key Stage 2
    Year 3: ages 7-8
    Year 4: ages 8-9
    Year 5: ages 9-10
Year 6: age 10-11 ('SATS' EXAMS)

    Secondary School

    Key Stage 3
    Year 7: ages 11-12
    Year 8: ages 12-13
Year 9: ages 13-14 ('SATS' EXAMS)

    Key Stage 4
    Year 10: ages 14-15
Year 11: ages 15-16 ('GCSE' EXAMS)

This is the end of compulsory education, then you can choose to stay on for either College or Sixth Form, which is:

    Key Stage 5
Year 12: ages 16-17 ('AS' EXAMS)
    Year 13: ages 17-18 ('A2' EXAMS)

Then, you can use your 'points' from your Post-16 (years 12/13) exams to go to University

I hope that makes some sense to anyone interested- our school system can be a little confusing!

    NORWEGIAN SCHOOL SYSTEM;

    primary school:
    1st - 4th grade, no exams

    junior school:
    5th - 7th grade, no exams

    secondary school:
8th grade - mid-terms (or 'SATS', it might be the same thing, idk) at winter & summer
    9th grade - mid-terms ('SATS')
    at winter & summer
10th grade - mid-terms at winter & GCSE exams at summer/end of semester.

    high school:
    11th - 13th grade, exams every year.
you can also study a year 4/extra year where you can travel to another country and study or practical learning/working in daily life.

    college/university:
depends on what you're studying for, but mostly five years or so.

    Re: School/College Systems

    Im in England.
And I'm in Year Nine now, and going into Year Ten in September.
But in a few years time I'm moving to Ireland, and I'd rather do Leaving Cert than A Levels otherwise I have to go through UCAS (equiv to CAO in Ireland) to get to CAO
and then I'll have to pay sooooo much more because I'd be an international student.
    :/

Points are good though, instead of just , "you need this many A's or B's" that kind of thing, cos at least the points are a bit more flexible if y'know what i mean.

right in my state in 10th grade you have to take psat, and then when you are in 11th grade you have to take the act and the mme. but you act score tells you if you graduate or night and your credits you get from the classes you took over the years in high school.

I live in Bedfordshire, in East Anglia, (in England), but my school system is different from everywhere in England.
You start aged 4/5 at Lower School, which is Reception and Years 1 - 4.
    Then there's Middle School, Years 5 - 8.
And then Upper School, which Years 9 - 11 are compulsory, and then there's two years of Sixth Form, which is Year 12 and Year 13.
But instead of going to Sixth Form, you can go to College, and then it's off to University.
